The University of Calgary unveiled its new solar powered race car on Wednesday.
The first race for the vehicle will be at the World Solar Challenge in Australia.
That race will take place at the end of October.
This is the second solar race car designed at the U of C.
The new car uses much more powerful solar cells, which means the vehicle can maintain speeds of 75 km/h and reach higher speeds in shorter bursts.
One member of the solar car teams says the technology they are perfecting will have practical applications for the average consumer.
“The way that cars are moving to hybrid powered cars now, it’s probably only a matter of time…I wouldn’t doubt seeing car companies adopt some of this technology and using it in their new cars,” says Ravi Mani.
This weekend, the car will be making a test run from Medicine Hat to Calgary.
